Aerogel insulation innovations from Energystore and Armacell

2 hours North Irish insulation manufacturer Energystore has launched the UK’s first aerogel-based injected insulation.

Energystore Spacebead, which combines expanded polystyrene beads with aerogel and adhesive, is aimed specifically at domestic cavity wall insulation applications.

The use of aerogels in construction has historically been limited to niche applications due to cost. However, Energystore claims that Spacebead 鈥渞evolutionises the process鈥 with 15% improved thermal conductivity compared to existing injected options, with a declared thermal conductivity of 0.029 W/mK.

Maximising performance with limited cavity space will help homeowners and landlords boost their EPC scores more easily, it is said.

The system is expected to enable house-builders to maintain a 100mm cavity wall when the Future Homes Standard is implemented in England, delivering construction cost savings. House-builders in the Republic of Ireland will also benefit as energystore spacebead庐 is the only injected insulation that meets the 0.18 U-Value backstop in a 150mm cavity wall.

Energystore managing director Connor McCandless described it as 鈥渁 game-changing product鈥.

Meanwhile another insulation foam producer, Armacell, has introduced its next generation of aerogel insulation products: ArmaGel XGH for high temperature applications and ArmaGel XGC for cryogenic and dual temperature applications.

ArmaGel XGH is engineered for conditions up to 650掳C and claims up to five times better thermal performance compared to traditional insulation materials. It complies with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1, Category A and IOGP S-738 (JIP33), making it suitable for offshore, industrial and process equipment applications.

ArmaGel XGC is compliant with ASTM C1728 Type I and Type IV, Grade 1, Category A, offering superior insulation performance from -196 掳C to +250 掳C. The hydrophobic insulation with an integrated zero-perm vapour barrier provides high water-vapour resistance, ensuring reliable protection against corrosion under insulation even in the most demanding environments.

Its sound absorption properties and low dynamic stiffness result in a blanket with excellent acoustic capabilities, according to the manufacturer. When used in an ArmaSound Industrial Systems configuration, ArmaGel XGC meets and exceeds the insertion loss classifications according to ISO 15665 at reduced thickness and weight compared to traditional systems, Armacell says.
